After George BUTSON's father Thomas BUTSON's death, his mother Mary Anna PARKMAN remarried with William TOOZE. The family sailed to New York in 1859 and settled in Ohio just before the US Civil War began.

On 6 Feb 1864, both George BUTSON and William TOOZE enlisted in Company H of the 41st Ohio Infantry Regiment. The record of both of them in Company H is on page 114 of the 1879 D. W. Ensign "History of Cuyahoga County, Ohio" (https://ia801202.us.archive.org/10/items/historyofcuyahog00john_0/historyofcuyahog00john_0.pdf). The regiment was formed at Cleveland, Ohio.

No further military records are known of William TOOZE. A Willamette Valley Oregon Portrait & Biographical Record ( https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/collection/1030/tree/68607675/person/40186760300/media/3ef38d59-4871-4532-9484-f8f07cd3b12f?_phsrc=MvB3742&usePUBJs=true ) of his sons says he moved to Barry County, Michigan in 1863 (which is clearly untrue since he enlisted in the Ohio Infantry in 1864) and died 1868 at Bedford, Barry County, Michigan. However Family Search has the complete Barry County death records for this period, and there is no record of his death there. So the last solid record known for William TOOZE is this 6 Feb 1864 enlistment record.

George BUTSON was killed 27 May 1864 in battle at Pickett's Mill, Georgia.
