Known Information

The records support the following facts.

Joan VICARY

There may have been three separate women named Joan VICARY.

Wife of Joseph BUTSON

She died 1792 at age 78, making her birth year about 1714.

When she married Joseph BUTSON in 1775, she was the widow Joan VICARY of the parish of Brompton Regis. The record does not include her maiden name nor the name of her first husband.

Mother of Joseph BUTSON and Thomas BUTSON

She was known as Joan VICARY in 1754 and 1756.

Wife of John VICARY

Prior to 1757, her maiden name was Joan MIDDLETON of the parish of Brompton Regis.

Joseph BUTSON

There may have been two separate men named Joseph BUTSON.

Father of Joseph and Thomas

Nothing is known other than his name and that in 1754 and 1756, he fathered two illegitimate sons by a woman named Joan VICARY.

Huband of Joan widow VICARY

Joseph BUTSON was a sojourner at the time of his 1775 marriage with Joan widow VICARY. Thus he was not from Brompton Regis. He was a widower at the time of his 1775 marriage. Thus he had a prior wife. The record does not include his home parish nor the name of his first wife.

Avoiding Possible Mis-Interpretations

Confusion of Multiple Joan VICARYs

The records show that the Joan VICARY who bore the sons Joseph BUTSON and Thomas BUTSON in 1754 and 1756 was not the Joan MIDDLETON VICARY who married John VICARY in 1757.
