Overview and Motivation

In striving to connect my 3rd great grandmother Elizabeth (Gray, Gibson) Johnston to a specific location in Ireland, I received information on the Sproat family from Jean Sproat in March-April 2022. This information connects Elizabeth's husband Christopher Gibson's brother John Gibson to County Armagh.

Source of the Information

The source of the information is the trancript of an obituary that Jean Sproat sent to me:

The Orillia Packet, Oct 28, 1886-HAMPSHIRE MILL. The late John Gibson was born 24th May 1811, left the County Armagh, Ireland, forty-five years ago, and took up his abode in Pickering, and in 1871 he moved into North Orillia. He had been ill of dropsy since spring. A widow, three sons and three daughters, survive him. He was a member of the Church of England and Ireland, and a good Conservative.

In seeking to find the original image of this record, I cannot find any online free source.

Confirmation in Other Records

His brother Christopher Gibson's son James Gibson married in Ontario and gave his birthplace as Armagh.

John Gibson's entry in the Gibson family Bible gives the same date of birth.

Thus I conclude that John Gibson was born in County Armagh, Irleand, pending discovery of evidence to further confirm or refute that conclusion.
