This is the text of a 23 Nov 2016 e-mail from Andreya Hernandez-Garcia who had called her mother Rebecca Perez Hernandez:

I asked my mom about Jose Chavez (his sad nickname was Hey-you) and Manuel Chavez who were father and son.  She said that Manuel (nickname was "Tifo") died very tragically, in a car crash, at the age of 18 years old.

In 1963, Tifo was spending his last summer in Chicago before going off to college in California.  One day, he was invited out for a drive by the local baker's son who had also asked two female friends to come along.  My mom remembers Tia Maria saying that he didn't want to go, but eventually, gave in.

Speeding across the Calumet Bridge, the car fishtailed and hit a pole.  Our cousin was killed and my mom recalled that the girl next to him was either left paralyzed or killed as well.  The baker's son sustained no physical injuries.

Years later, the baker's son, suffering from PTSD, and in the midst of a fitful rage, killed his father.
