Did Richard Yeoman Luke marry Sarah Cade or Sarah Pierson?

Research note by Wesley Johnston, created 18 Jun 2022, last update 19 Jun 2022
Thanks to Joy Richardson for pointing out some of these records and bringing to my attention the correction needed for Sarah's maiden name.

Background

Trees on Ancestry conflict about the maiden name of the Sarah who married Richard Yeoman LUKE in Durham County, Ontario, 3 Sep 1853. No documentation is found on any of these trees of this very specific marriage date, and I cannot find the image of the record in either the 1853 or 1854 Home District marriages which I searched page by page.

Most of the trees have her as Sarah PIERSON, but a few have her as Sarah CADE. This research note gathers the available information to make a working conclusion based on the available evidence.

1909 Death of Sarah Cade LUKE

Sarah's own death record shows her name as Sarah Cade LUKE. The record image is at

1902 Re-marriage of their Son George James LUKE

On 30 Apr 1902, their widowed son George James LUKE of East Whitby (born in Whitby) remarried with 23 year old spinster Rebecca of Whitby (born in Pickering). His parents are shown as "Richard Y LUKE" and "Sarah CADE".

The image of this register is spread across two images on Ancestry at:

1891 Census of Whitby East

The two sons are shown in consecutive households. In the first household, that of the older son William LUKE, their mother Sarah LUKE his shown along with an aunt Charlotte PARISH. I have not researched this, but I am told by researcher Joy Richardson that Charlotte's maiden name was Charlotte CADE.

Conclusion: Sarah's maiden name was CADE and not PIERSON

I find no documentation to support the surname PIERSON. But three records, two of which are explicit and one indirect, strongly support the surname CADE.
