OBITUARY.

MR JOSEPH ESLICK

Much regret was expressed on the news becoming known that Mr Joseph Eslick, 31 Union street, New Brighton, the well-known tobacconist, had died yesterday morning. Mr Eslick became ill on the 11th inst., suffering from acute Bright's disease, upon which pneumonia supervened. He was a native of St. Blazey, Cornwall, England, and for three years served as ship's barber in H.M.S. Southampton, at that time on the North American station, under the command of Captain "Jackie" Fisher, now Lord Fisher. Mr Eslick came to Christchurch about thirty-five years ago, and two years later, with his brother Alfred (deceased) started a tobacconists' and hairdressers' business in the present premises in Hobbs' Buildings, Colombo street. He was a member of the New Brighton Bowling Club and the New Brighton Surf Club. He was well liked, and quietly and unostentatiously did much to help his less fortunate fellow-beings. Mr Eslick was 58 years of age, and leaves a widow to mourn her loss.
