In the 1841 and 1851 census of Biscovey in the parish of St. Blazey, Cornwall, two children in the household of Richard Hellar Rowse are not his children: Mary BARTLE (1834; identified in the 1841 census as Mary ROWSE) and Edwin ROWSE (1837). These appear to be the base (out-of-wedlock) children of his daughter Urusula.

In the 1841 census, which did not give household relationships, the only children of Richard Hellar Rowse and his wife Mary (who was from Northumberland, where she and Richard apparently married) are their sons James (1821) and Richard (1824), both unmarried. Two other sons named Richard had died young, one in 1816 at age 1 without ever being baptized and one, baptized Richard Anguis Rowse, in 1822 at age 3. I can find no marriage nor burial record for Ursula. So I do not know if she was still living in 1841, but she was not her parents. (I have not yet figured out who the Christiana Angle (age 60) is who is also in the house.)

In the 1851 census, which did give household relationships, the two sons and the two grandchildren are shown with their relationships to Richard Hellar Rowse.

I found no baptism of Edwin Rowse. However, there was a fatherless child, Mary Bartte ROWSE, baptized at St. Blazey 20 Apr 1834, daughter of Priscilla Rowse. There is no record of any baptism of a Priscilla Rowse that is at all close to fitting the mother. But since this is the grandchild of Richard Hellar Rowse, then presumably the name Ursula was either mis-heard or mis-read as Priscilla. (The image of the original record should be viewed whenever that becomes possible.)

The sons of Richard and Mary were clearly too young to have had children in 1834 and 1837. The only conclusion that I can see that fits is that Mary and Edwin were the base children of Richard and Mary's daughter Ursula.

Presumably the father of Mary was known, and he had the surname BARTLE or BARTEL. There are St. Blazey baptisms in 1840 and 1841 of children of Stephen and Elizabeth BARKLE and of Sampson and Elizabeth BARKLE. These were in fact brothers, the sons of John and Rebecca BARTLE / BARTELL born at Calstock in 1815 and 1805 respectively. Thus it seems most likely that the father of Mary BARTLE (aka Mary ROWSE) was Stephen BARTLE, who married Elizabeth HOBBA at St. Austell 27 Feb 1836.

The father of Edwin is completely unknown. I have no conjectures as to who he might have been, other than that it is very unlikely that he was Stephen BARTLE, who was married shortly before Edwin was conceived. It is also possible that Ursula died in childbirth from Edwin's 1837 birth, though that is sheer conjecture to try to explain why she is not found in the 1841 census.
