Dr. Warren J. Vanhetloo, age 86, of Holland, MI, died Sunday, October 31, 2010 at his residence. Born June 21, 1924 in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was the son of Elbert and Lillian (Vanderheide) Vanhetloo. Growing up in the Ionia area, and graduating from high school there in 1942, Warren served in the US Army from 1943-1945. He received a B.D. in Education from Calvin College. He taught four years in Grand Rapids Baptist Institute (now Cornerstone University) while earning the B.D. degree in Grand Rapids Baptist Theological Seminary. He received the Th.M. degree from Calvin Seminary, majoring in Old Testament, and completed three years toward a Ph.D. degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. During a sabbatical from teaching, he earned a Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary. He served in three pastorates in Michigan, was a dean and professor at Central Baptist Theological Seminary of Minneapolis, and then both dean and professor at Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary in Lansdale, PA. Warren was also the author/editor, typist, proofreader and emailer, of the Cogitations. The purpose of the Cogitations was to stimulate cognitive thinking, strengthen faith, and to share a few jokes. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine (Case) Vanhetloo, one brother, and one sister. Surviving are his step daughters; Sharon and Hil Sybesma of Escondido, CA, Trude and Steve Brower of Cartersville, Georgia, Lindsey and Dennis Smiertka of Bonita Springs, Florida, Shelley and Scott MacGirr of Grand Haven, MI, ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 4, 2010, with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Chappell Funeral Home 637 W. Main St. Fennville, MI 49408. Officiating will be Rev. Clint Echols, and burial will be in the Fennville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Zeeland, or the Library fund at Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary 1380 Valley Forge Rd. Lansdale, Pennsylvania 19446.
