The following was sent by Elma (Buehler) Lehmann to her cousin Walter Johnston's son Wesley in 1987. I have added some square-bracketed notations and reformatted the text for easier reading.

During World War II he served in the U. S. Army. He was a Sgt in the 45th Infantry Division. He operated a ham radio. He was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and Camp Howze in Texas. He was sent overseas December 18, 1944. January 22, 1945 he was stationed in Western France. Went to Innsbruck, Austria May 31, 1945 and stationed near these towns Landau, Laudwigh Hoffen, Mannheim in April 1945 and June 6, 1945 in Otz, Austria. He was one of the 410 Chicago fighting men to come home from the battlefronts on September 10, 1945 on the ship SSS Marine Devial [S. S. "Marine Devil"] at Boston, Massachusetts. Also on the same shipa cousin of ours named Carl Stroble who lived at 3024 Flournoy; his parents were George & Elizabeth Stroble.
